1957 Auto-Union at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show

At the 1957 International Motor Show (IAA) at Frankfurt, Auto Union unveiled its long awaited new model, the DKW 600. This was DKW's first post-war passenger car design after two earlier failed projects. The DKW 600 was rushed into prototype especially for the Frankfurt show to demonstrate to the Auto Union's financiers that was able to modernize its range. The DKW 600 however, was not it. Originally fitted with a 600cc twin cylinder engine of pre-war design (last used in the F8 Reichklasse), the prototype was not actually driveable, being hand-built only for display. Its modern design attracted a lot of positive attention and enthusiasm in the motoring press, which encouraged the company to press ahead. By the time the car was actually road-ready, 18 months had passed and the 600cc twin had been replaced by a newly designed 750 triple. The new car would be named the F11 Junior.
